If you sleep on your side and you've given up on earplugs, the problem almost certainly wasn't you.
Roughly 6 in 10 adults sleep on their side. Almost no earplug is designed for it. Walk through what's on the market and you'll find stems, rings, handles and flanges — all features that make a plug easier to insert and remove while you're upright, and all features that turn into a pressure point the moment your ear meets a pillow.
That pressure is what wakes you at 3 a.m. Not the noise. The plug.
Why foam doesn't solve it
Foam expands after insertion. That's how it seals — and it's also why it keeps pushing outward against your canal for as long as it's in. Add the weight of your head and you've got a slow-building ache that most people only notice once they're already awake.
Foam is also single-use in practice. It picks up oil and bacteria, loses its spring within a night or two, and gets thrown away. Sixty euros a year, into a bin.
Why "sleep" earplugs often aren't
A lot of products marketed for sleep are simply the brand's standard earplug in a different colour. The giveaway is the side-on product photo: if you can see a stem, a loop or a ring standing proud of the ear, you will feel it against a pillow. Marketing copy can't change geometry.
What to actually look for
- Flush profile. Nothing should sit past the outer edge of your ear. Check the side-on photo. If you can see a stem, you'll feel it.
- Soft material. Silicone that softens at body temperature, rather than foam that expands against you.
- Multiple sizes. A pack with one size fits roughly a third of people. A plug that doesn't seal does nothing at all.
- Shallow fit. A plug that sits deep is a plug that aches by morning.
How to get the fit right
Reach over your head with the opposite hand and pull your ear gently up and back — this straightens the canal. Insert, then release. Start one size larger than you'd guess; most people under-estimate, and a slightly large tip seals better than a slightly small one.
